Well I’m actually glad you asked this question.
First of all, anyone who has ever tried to “force” me to do anything before knows that it never works as i am very hard headed and stubborn. These traits of mine are hard earned from lessons I’ve learned about myself and my efforts to conserve my happiness over the years, especially when it comes to what I do creatively.
As for me releasing a “bubblegum pop record” I’m amazed at how quick to judge some are without even hearing an entire album. Having said that, as an artist I hope I’m never limited to any one style or genre just so people will remain comfortable with whatever box they had put me in. I always want to challenge myself and take risks and I believe that’s also partly why my fans still buy my records and come to my shows. Ive always stayed true to my own path musically and have often been overlooked by radio for that very reason. But making records I like and would want to listen to has always been more important to me than fitting in to a format. We all hopefully grow, change and evolve as people and as artists our work cant help but to reflect that change. For me, this album was about having fun and being up for hearing a different sonic for myself. I wanted to play with different sounds, different ideas lyrically and just see what would happen without being too precious or having any master plan. If after hearing the whole thing you think it’s a bubble gum pop record then I hope I’ve added something to the spectrum of that genre of music and you can just pass it on to your 13 year old sister! Lol
I never want to repeat myself so as fans you’ll just have to bear with me and be open to the element of surprise.
Just wait for my country album!!!
Finally, the quote included in this question has me noting the differences between myself and an artist like Brittany Spears emphasizing that when my band and I hit the stage we play our instruments and sing LIVE every night, every time. It was true then and is still true today. Im proud of that fact and regardless of the kind of record I choose to make at the moment, that is an unwavering facet of my live show. It is always “live”. So no matter what kind of sounds or songs I want to experiment with at the time my fans know what they are going to get at a show of mine. I will work my ass off to give them an honest experience and I’ll be sweating bullets at the end of it.
